The light turns green, but your car will not move. Traffic is coming from several directions, drivers behind you are getting impatient, and you need help. A breakdown in an intersection is about getting people out of danger first, then arranging the vehicle’s removal.

Put safety ahead of moving the car
Turn on your hazard lights. If the vehicle can still be controlled and you can safely reach a nearby place out of traffic, do so. If it cannot move safely, do not force it or step into traffic to push it. Hazard lights help others notice you, but they do not make the scene safe.
If you are stranded in an active intersection and creating an immediate traffic hazard, call 911 and explain where you are. Report injuries, smoke, fire, or any other immediate danger. Follow the emergency dispatcher’s directions. Do not stand in front of or behind the vehicle or try to direct traffic yourself.
Whether it is safer to remain inside or leave depends on the scene. Avoid stepping into moving traffic. Tell the towing company what is blocking the road
Once emergency help is arranged when needed, call for towing assistance. Give the town, intersection or nearest cross streets, direction of travel, and lane you are in. Tell dispatch that the vehicle is blocking traffic and whether police are responding.
Describe the vehicle and what happened: it stalled, will not shift, has a damaged wheel, or cannot steer. You do not need to diagnose the fault. These details help the operator assess the equipment and access needed.
Let the responders handle the scene
Keep clear of loading equipment and follow instructions from police and the towing operator. Agree on a suitable repair shop or other receiving destination when it is safe to discuss the details.
